“It’s Always Easier and Cheaper in the Long Run to Just Do It Right In the First Place”

March 9th, 2009

Growing up, there was a grandfatherly fellow in our town that adopted all of us as kids as his own.  He would watch us, comment on how we’ve grown, ask us about our family, and often, share a bit of his wisdom.

He had a saying and a story for everything.  I mean everything.

If your hand itched he would say that meant money was coming your way. If you found a penny face up on the sidewalk, it was good luck.  If he saw a certain bird in the area, he told us that meant spring was on its way.

I always remember those sayings as I come across similar things in my life now and the events that promoted him to say it in the first place.

One time, there was a huge pothole in the street in the middle to town.  The road crew would come out and throw some dirt in it and a little asphalt and they would be gone.  After a few months, the hole was back and it was usually much bigger.

They would come back out with their trucks and shovels, throw some more dirt in the hole and lay a little more asphalt.  And once again, they were gone.

My wise mentor would watch each time the crew was out.  He would walk over to them as they worked and strike up a conversation about that pothole and offer his advice on the situation.

The road crew was there so often, they got to know my friend well.  And they would cringe as he walked up because they knew he was about to share his opinion with them if they wanted it or not.

He would ask them why they were there, even though it was obvious, and they would answer.  He would remind them it had only been a few months since they were there doing the same exact thing.  The supervisor would shrug and agree as the old gentlemen continued on.

“Now, don’t you think if you fixed it right, you could save yourself a lot of time and grief”, he said.

“Yeah, but the city wants us to save money so we can only do a patch”, the supervisor replied.

“Well seems to me, you have been here 4 times this year alone.  And you know you will have to be back here in a couple months again.  How can having 3 men waste their time doing the same thing over and over, be saving the city, and the taxpayers for that matter, any money?  Seems to be, It’s Always Easier and Cheaper in the Long Run to Just Do It Right In the First Place.”

I think about his words often.  As a dentist, when I see a patient suffering with a dental problem unnecessarily, it reminds me of the pothole.

Patients rely on me to give them my best treatment. They rely on me to fix it right the first time. And they want me to save them time, energy, as well as money in the long run.  That is my role as their dentist.

For patients who are missing teeth, that is why I recommend dental implants.  Not only do they replace the teeth, but they also stabilize the bite, provide a strong anchor of support for chewing, as well as give the patient back confidence and comfort that they won’t get with any other option.    Dental implants restore so much to a person’s quality of life; it is difficult to even put a figure on it.

Dental implants are the best option for tooth replacement.  It is a wonderful service that we enjoy providing for our VIPs (Very Important Patients!).  And just like my ‘adopted grandfather’, we always have room at our dental home for one more special person if you would like to join us here : http://implantdentistrystow.com

Do Dental Implants Require the Maintenance as Natural Teeth?

February 25th, 2009

Do dental implants require the same maintenance as natural teeth? Yes. In fact, not only do dental implants require the same maintenance as natural teeth, but they actually require more. The reason dental implants require the same amount if not more maintenance as regular teeth do is because they are very similar to regular teeth. Dental implants are modeled after natural teeth roots — the titanium rod or screw of the dental implant is literally implanted in the patient’s jaw just like a regular tooth root grows. Then a dental cap is attached to the top of this rod or screw, just like a regular tooth is attached to its natural root. Thus, there are the same worries of plaque and food particles getting stuck under and around the dental implant and cap as there are of food particles and plaque get stuck under and around a regular tooth and its root.

However, dental implants require a bit more than just simple flossing and brushing like regular teeth do. Because dental implants required surgery to be implanted in a patient’s mouth, there is a much greater risk of infection underneath the gum line. Because of this risk, a person with dental implants should go to their dental implant specialist for regular check ups to make sure that the area around their implants is healing properly and that no infection has taken root there.

Dental Implant Procedures

February 24th, 2009

There are quite a few dental implant procedures that a dental implant dentist or surgeon will first follow when he or she first meets with you. These dental implant procedures usually include taking X rays of your jaws to ensure that you have enough bone to handle dental implant surgery and the healing process and will also include an interview to find out how you lost the teeth you have and what kind of life style you live. These questions will help the dental implant surgeon make sure that you will take proper care of your teeth and implants after you have the surgery.

If you are embarrassed by the fact that you are missing teeth but are worried that you will not have enough money to pay for the dental implants that you need or want, do not worry. Many dental implant dentists and specialists are willing to finance their work. This means that you can get the implants you need or want now for a small down payment and can then pay off the remaining balance with monthly payments. If you are interested in financing your dental work, then you want to make sure to ask your dental implant specialist if he or she finances his or her work prior to committing to have the surgery done at his or her practice. This way you will not paint yourself into a corner.

Is Age a Factor for Dental Implant Treatment?

February 9th, 2009

In dental implant treatment, the dentist fixes titanium rods into the jawbone. Titanium is used as it fuses well with the bone. These rods are given 3-6 months to heal and fuse completely after which artificial teeth made of ceramic or porcelain are fitted onto them.

If the dental implant treatment is done successfully, the new teeth look, feel and function exactly like real teeth.

In order to do dental treatment, the dentist has to first consider the health and fitness of the patient. Among the various factors, age is a factor for dental implant treatment but is not an obstacle. It doesn’t matter if the patient is elderly in age or young. In fact most dental implant treatments are done for those above 70 years of age. Age is not a factor for dental implant treatment if the patient is physically fit and does not have any complications like uncontrolled diabetes, or is a smoker, uses steroids or has an infection like HIV.

Age is a factor for dental implant treatment only if it affects the bone density of the jawbone. A high density is required so that the titanium rods can be fitted in correctly. With age there may be a tendency to lose bone strength. In such a case the dentist will suggest bone grafting to increase the strength of the bone. Dental implant dentistry has been known to be very successful for patients even in their nineties.

Treatment for Crowding Teeth

January 29th, 2009

Crowding teeth are exactly as it sounds – a crowd of teeth in the mouth. Many times the person’s mouth is not wide enough to accommodate all the teeth, or the teeth emerge very close to each other such that there is excess space on the sides. In such a situation one has to look for a treatment for crowding teeth as they look all crooked and misaligned. Treatment for crowding teeth is necessary since otherwise they can lead to many difficulties including a misaligned bite, difficulty speaking and even an inferiority complex about the way you look.

Treatment for crowding teeth generally involves using braces. These metal bands and brackets are fitted onto the teeth and gently push them into the correct positions. Often for treatment for crowding teeth uses braces the dentist might have to extract some teeth to make space for the other teeth to be pushed.

Other treatment for crowding teeth involves using invisalign which is a type of aligner. Invisalign is more expensive and has the advantage of being aesthetically more pleasing while carrying out the task of pushing teeth in their right places.
Sometimes crowding teeth may be the result of impacted wisdom tooth/teeth. In this situation, treatment for crowding teeth can be the extraction of the wisdom teeth. Doing so gives the other teeth to spread out and not remain crowded.

What is Dental Implant Restoration and How does It Work?

January 1st, 2009

Dental implants are the best possible solution for replacement of missing teeth. If only one tooth is missing, there is no other way to fill the gap unless you are considering putting a bridge there. This would require ruining perfectly fine neighboring teeth. A restoration of a missing tooth is a common procedure and allows the dental professional to implant a screw into your jawbone or skull bone, providing halt for the crown. This screw is usually made out of titanium, because this metal is known by its ability to fuse with the bone tissue. The procedure is routine and can be employed right after an excision has taken place.

In such a case, a small part of the gingiva is removed from the drilling place and the screw is being placed. Then a crown is being placed on the screw, providing for a tooth which will look and feel the same as the natural one. The other possibility is when a gap is already present and an incision is being made and the gums flapped open, providing the drilling place where the screw will be placed. Nowadays immediate loading procedures are available, where crowns are being affixed the very same day. Longer procedures would require a few months time and multiple visits to the dentist. Both procedures have excellent success statistics.
